A conventional CCD camera can be operated to detect a number of single X-ray photons in each CCD frame. By using software for the identification of those photons and by calculating the hit position (e.g. center of gravity) and summed intensity, it is possible to get access to the energy of each X-ray photon and a hit position with sub-pixel accuracy. Both properties allow advantageous or even completely new methods in X-ray analytics.

Especially the energy-resolving capabilities beneficial to discriminate the actual signal from a noise or straylight background, which enhances the signal-to-noise ratio in e.g. wavelength dispersive measurements. Furthermore, since single fluorescence lines can be distinguished, scanning-free GEXRF or full filed micro XRF are feasible.
